BBC Radio Nottingham >> Interview w/ Theresa
The Beat: I don't know how you do what you do because your set was just gones everyone's attention, moves them, lifts them up at the same time. All of these emotions simultaneously. How have you achieved that?
Theresa Wayman: Um, woah. Well, first of all, that's really nice to hear that that's what you're feeling from our show. I think we just feel that way ourselves, I guess and tune into the emotion behind the music that we write. And in a live setting it's really nice to just like let it soar. So, and in a space like that, as well, when it's just like so much ambience in the room and there's so much like natural reverb going on that you can't, you can't really go wrong.
TB: Soar is a good word. That's exactly what it did. It was soaring like an eagle! That's what it was doing.
TW: Yeah, well we are American.
TB: Exactly, yeah, yeah.
TW: That's us- we're eagles!
TB: You are American; but you've been away from America for a long time; you're not gonna see America for a little while, yes?
TW: Um, no, another three weeks. I was feeling today like "oh, wow, we've been out for about four weeks; we must be about wrapping it up." And then I found out there was another like three weeks.
TB: How are you guys? Has homesickness kicked in?
TW: It did a little bit, today. And I think I'm really excited to make the most of these next three weeks and this last tour because we're not gonna be out again for a little while. What I get homesick for is my son. I have a five year old son, and my family and stuff. Also just like having time to write, and create in that way. That's the one drawback; you don't really get to do something new. And you're getting all this inspiration, from all the bands that you're watching and all the places that you see. It's kind of a travesty, you don't have the time at that moment to really like lay down a song or something.
TB: And the danger is, if you write in this vibe which is all about missing home and being on the road
TW: It's a good thing to write about anything that strikes your fancy to write about, so then why not, you know? Some people write about travels and I'm sure some people write about heartache, some people write about like, you know, the riots, probably. That probably made a few songs. Or just like, even if it's not specifically that, just what drives people to do things like riot or kill people like the guy in Oslow or whatever like those kind of things. We're singing them firsthand right now actually, and that's all really powerful stuff to like think about. And kind of speak about, comment on and maybe help open other people's eyes to what's going on in the world. We have a voice right now, and there's like, all kinds of things that we can do with it, you know.
TB: Are you in a position where people will listen to you now, more so than ever, because of the success of the album, because you're in increasing status a band. Do you think, with that, comes a degree of responsibility and influence as well?
TW: Yeah, most definitely, I think, um, it's really important to like take the voice that we have and help shape culture and society into something that is productive and constructive, as opposed to destructive. And I don't think, you know, Britney Spears, and Katy Perry and just like pop stars and all that kinda stuff are really, really fun and can be great to listen to. But I think, take it with a grain of salt which a lot of young kids don't take with a grain of salt. They're looking at Britney Spears and Katy Perry and going like, "Oh, I wanna be like a sex kitten or like that should be my priority, you know, like at eleven years old, I should have my main focus be like going to the club and texting like, 'when are you gonna get here?' to my friends and like 'come on, let's dance' and like 'let's pour ourselves some shots' and like, 'get drunk'". You know, like that kinda stuff is really what the mainstream music is often times promoting and I don't think they're using their responsibility accurately. And, you know, I'm not saying, don't party or I'm not saying don't have a good time but I'm saying like, I would never uh, glamorize a complete loss of innocence in the way that I feel that they do.
TB: Thank you so much for taking the time out to talk to me, especially straight after your ice cream which looked delicious. Did you enjoy that?
TW: Yeah, if I was not making any sense at certain moments in this conversation it was because I was thinking about that ice cream and how they didn't give me enough. And I need to go get another one.
TB: Let's go get another one! That's great, now, Theresa, thank you very much indeed.
TW: Alright, cool.

We all have stuff we’re figuring out about life, you know?” she says, in a matter-of-fact drawl. “Shadows, which I wrote, is about Los Angeles and feeling closed in by it. A lot of negative things started happening – muggings and shootings. I saw somebody get killed a few days after another friend had killed themselves.” She half-smiles. “We’re moody, but also really happy.”
