Remember when Emily interviewed Ariel Pink? →

Former home-recording maestro Ariel Pink has not only expanded his live and recorded line-up to include a full band, but he’s also made the switch from the Animal Collective-curated Paw Tracks label to indie legend 4AD for his forthcoming record,Before Today. We had Warpaint’s Emily Kokal, a fellow LA musician, talk with Pink about his new record—and just about everything that came before it.

Radiohead would be a good example, too. They’ve been going for so long, they try new ways to get something new. For example, a band that’s played live together forever might try to switch instruments and record them separately and see what happens. That’s really cool; it keeps it fresh, because in my opinion, you don’t really see many great bands get better. Usually at the end of their career, they’ve either exhausted one style or maybe they don’t even enjoy playing music anyone and it’s for the money. I think PJ Harvey is another good example. She seems to play different characters, so she evolves. Like her last record was Let England Shake, and the record before was piano and singing higher than she ever had. It’s those kinda things that I really admire because it’s taking the risk that you might lose some fans who want you hear ‘your sound’. But it’s really more about your expression as an artist and the ability to discover all the different sides that want to express themselves. A lot of artists begin to believe their own image, and stick within those parameters, which makes the music sort of start to suck.
